US Open champion Emma Raducanu and her coach have split up, with the 18-year-old saying on Friday she wants to work with someone more experienced as her profile grows on the WTA Tour.
Raducanu, from Great Britain, won the US Open on September 11 as a qualifier, beating Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the final.
To prepare for the tournament, she worked with Andrew Richardson, who coached her for two years on the youth circuit and rejoined her team in July as a short team. She previously separated from coach Nigel Sears, who is Andy Murray’s father-in-law.
“I’m looking for someone who has been at that level and knows what it takes,” said Raducanu.
“And especially right now because I’m so new, I really need someone to guide me who’s been through it before.”
He told reporters that parting with Richardson was difficult. Richardson played on the British Davis Cup squad, but is not part of the WTA Tour inner circle.
“It’s hard to have that conversation with someone, but I think that’s just what I need for me,” she told reporters.
Raducanu rose to no. 22 in the world after his first career victory in New York. He said he won’t rush a decision on his coach.
Friday was a great day for Raducanu. He also played doubles with Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, at the National Tennis Center in London.
“His right is incredible,” Raducanu said of his partner.
